Planck-scale physics and solutions to the strong CP problem without the axion.

چکیده
We analyse the impact of quantum gravity on the possible solutions to the strong CP problem which utilize the spontaneously broken discrete symmetries, such as parity and time reversal invariance. We find that the stability of the solution under Planck scale effects provides an upper limit on the scale Λ of relevant symmetry breaking. This result is model dependent and the bound is most restrictive for the seesaw type models of fermion masses, with Λ < 10 GeV. The strong CP problem versus Planck scale physics
We discuss conditions that should be satisfied by axion models for solving the strong CP problem. It has been observed that Planck scale effects may render the axion models ineffective if there are gauge invariant operators of dimension less than 10 which break explicitly the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry. We argue that only those operators formed of fields which have vacuum expectation values are...
متن کاملSolutions to the Strong-CP Problem in a World with Gravity
We examine various solutions of the strong-CP problem to determine their sensitivity to possible violations of global symmetries by Planck scale physics. While some solutions remain viable even in the face of such effects, violations of the Peccei–Quinn (PQ) symmetry by non-renormalizable operators of dimension less than 10 will generally shift the value of θ to values inconsistent with the exp...
متن کاملSimple supersymmetric solution to the strong CP problem.
It is shown that the minimal supersymmetric left-right model can provide a natural solution to the strong CP problem without the need for an axion, nor any additional symmetries beyond supersymmetry and parity. Quantum chromodynamics, which is extremely succesful in describing strongly interacting phenomena both in the low as well as the high energy domain, has the well-known problem that it ca...
متن کاملPlanck-Scale Physics and the Peccei-Quinn Mechanism
Global-symmetry violating higher-dimension operators, expected to be induced by Planck-scale physics, in general drastically alter the properties of the axion field associated with the Peccei-Quinn solution to the strong-CP problem, and render this solution unnatural. The particle physics and cosmology associated with other global symmetries can also be significantly changed. ⋆ Research support...
متن کاملOn the Possibility of Large Axion Decay Constants
The decay constant of the QCD axion is required by observation to be small compared to the Planck scale. In theories of “natural inflation,” and certain proposed anthropic solutions of the cosmological constant problem, it would be interesting to obtain a large decay constant for axion-like fields from microscopic physics. String theory is the only context in which one can sensibly address this...
